Placing the Implant Post
The first step of the dental implant procedure involves placing the titanium implant post into the jawbone. This is completed using local anesthesia, and the doctor will make an incision in the gum, exposing the jawbone. They then create a hole in the bone and insert the post, which is followed by stitching up the gum to allow for osseointegration—the process by which the post fuses with the jawbone. This process takes several months to complete and creates a strong foundation for an artificial tooth.
Attaching the Artificial Tooth
The second procedure is the placement of the abutment, which is the connector between the titanium post and the artificial tooth. After anesthesia, the gums are opened up again, and the abutment is placed on top of the implant post. Once both pieces are in place, an impression is taken and sent to a laboratory. At the lab, technicians create a custom crown that fits perfectly over the abutment and blends in with your existing teeth.
